WOW!

Which Grateful Dead Song are You?

Uncle John's Band
You are very laid back and peaceful. You enjoy music a lot, in fact, it is probably one of the biggest things in your life. While the rest of the world is in turmoil and time is flying you see beyond all of that by just laying back and listening to the music and thinking things over. You like to question lots of things and if you aren't careful, even you get caught up in the time flying just by wondering things. You have good insight on most things.... when life looks like easy street, there is danger at your door.

Bob Star Orchestra!

Managed to get out to this last night- arriving at Fillmore during the setbreak!
Another great time!!
It's been a really fun few days- thanks to Scotto for holding down the fort (his softball games ended up being cancelled-he was upset to have missed his chance at Weirbacks and predictably was too tired to head out to DSO last night. Thanks also to Kemmie for schleping me around. We had more fun than two preschool teachers prowling around the city on school nights ought to be allowed. Of course, she's off for more DSO, while I'm heading back downstairs to work on Rex goodies. Gonna catch up on some things (like sleeping) before Sunday's Weirbacks!!

from The Rex Foundation

Dear Friends,

We launched the Rex Community Caravan to be our virtual vehicle for philanthropy, where each of us can help generate positive social change with contributions that we might otherwise consider spare change over the course of a year, such as $5.00 is a penny a day, $36.00 is 10 cents a day, or $50 is 14 cents a day.

To demonstrate the power of spare change to generate social change, Rex is initiating a Call for Change to raise $50,000 over the next five months. All dollars raised via our Rex Community Caravan between October 3, 2006 and March 2, 2007 will be distributed as grants. Contributors can tell us if they want donations to go towards one of Rex's main areas of funding - healthy environment, individuality in the arts, social & economic justice, preservation of indigenous cultures, strong community and the education of children and adults.

To see what you can help accomplish, go to the Rex Community Caravan and make a donation on-line or download the Caravan form to fax or mail. To specify a grant area, enter one of the 6 bolded titles noted above. Forward this e-mail to others you want to bring on board the Rex Community Caravan to help generate social change with their spare change.

Each month, we'll announce the Caravan totals and include stories about the kinds of programs your contributions support, like the one about NextCourse, pictured below.

Get on board the Rex Community Caravan and watch your spare change generate social change. Check out Fostering the Power of Community, Service and the Arts for more about what we mean by social change and the work of the Rex Foundation towards this.

And, save Friday, December 1, 2006 for Vibes For Peace at the Warfield Theater, San Francisco.

Thanks for all your support.

Sandy Sohcot
Executive Director

May 2006 Rex Grantee - NextCourse

The work of NextCourse is integral to generating social change because it is helping people who have been systematically lacking vital information about and access to healthy food shift their behaviors and become part of the ever-growing population that demands health and sustainability. What a fun evening- before I continue...hear some for yourself clicky here!- Hoping the link is working by the time YOU click it.

My ever hardy cohort Kemmie, picked me up late afternoon yesterday. We were in good spirits despite gray & gloomy skies. Knowing we'd finally have 2 sets of Bobby in the city was like a hit of sunshine! Scott was sure his softball game was happening (argh, it's still softball season even though Baseball is finally over)...We were surprised to find only about 6 people in the ticket line and nobody in the will call line. I was first in line and that happily put me next to clear glass entrance doors. Though locked, we could easily hear soundchecks , even feel the vibrations on the outside walls (and yes, they were good vibrations). Only a few moments after we were standing there, Bobby walked by us, he was looking happy and ready to play! We soon heard him join in the sound check. All I could see from the line was Stevie Coyle and James Nash (WaybackS).
I could hear Bobby loud and clearly go through a rendition of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles".
On the ride up to SF, I tried singing Silver Threads to Kemmie but in my head it kept turning into "Mama Tried"...So, I had to smile when "Mama Tried" was played at the show..I'm getting ahead of myself so-
Back to soundcheck...
It might have been DA or the kind young man in the other line who was the first to recognize the strains of June/Johnny Carter's "Ring of Fire" being soundchecked. WOO HOO! They played it or parts of it several times and I couldnt have been more thrilled to hear it!

News from Munckmix:

Dear RatDog Live customer,

We would like to bring you some exciting news: Bob Weir's longtime friend and lyricist John Perry Barlow has released a new album: "Barlow Shanghai"

Barlow has mostly operated behind the scenes as a lyricist for The Grateful Dead (Cassidy, Estimated Prophet, Music Never Stopped,...), and various Bob Weir projects. That is - until now.

On a trip to Chicago last years Barlow met a group of seasoned jam band musicians known as "Mr. Blotto". Together they started writing a song just for the fun of it, but the chemistry grew, and in the course of several subsequent sessions the songs continued to flow. The result: "Barlow Shanghai" - an album full of original songs crafted and co-produced by Barlow himself.

Barlow Shanghai is being released on Oct. 13 and is not yet available in stores, but as a RatDog Live customer you can get it now. CDs are in stock and ready to ship, downloads are available immediately. The CD comes with a 6 page booklet including the lyrics to all 15 songs.

***********
Money Orders welcome - just send a list of the recordings you want with the money order to: MunckMix, P.O. Box 46, Glencoe, IL 60022.

I freaking LOVE El Paso!

Bluegrass festival taps roots sounds
By Andrew Gilbert
TIMES CORRESPONDENT
California's largest hoedown returns to Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadow when the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival transforms the park's western meadow into a huge jamboree.

Launched in 2001 by savvy San Francisco investor Warren Hellman as a one-day "strictly" bluegrass event, the festival has expanded temporally and stylistically, adding the qualifier "hardly" as it has come to embrace a wide swath of rootsy artists steeped in blues, bluegrass, rock and various forms of American old-time music.

Now in its sixth season, the free festival has quickly become a signature Bay Area event that draws on the region's deep reservoir of roots-music talent, while also presenting big-name national acts. It's as if someone rolled two months of Freight & Salvage's calendar into a single weekend, and then threw some rock stars into the mix for good measure.

"The first year we called it 'Strictly Bluegrass' because we had Emmylou Harris, and trying to push her into just playing bluegrass is impossible," said Hellman, a student of old-time banjo. "It's funny; she's been more bluegrassy every year since then. I've been surprised and pleased by the breadth of bluegrass itself; and as we've added the other stuff, the Jimmie Dale Gilmores and Robert Earl Keens, the different kinds of music that give me pleasure has expanded a lot."

The festival opens Friday with a light schedule on one stage. While open to the general public, the morning program is geared for grade-school students as part of the Daniel Pearl Foundation World Music Days. The afternoon kicks off with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, who along with Joe Ely helped pioneer the progressive country music sound in the mid-'70s with their West Texas-based band the Flatlanders.

For many years Gilmore was better-known as a songwriter than a performer, but since releasing his first solo album in 1988 on the Oakland-based HighTone label, he's become a powerful interpreter of his original material.

Elvis Costello headlines on Friday with the Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods, a band he's borrowing from Bill Kirchen, the guitarist who supplied the hot twang and cool vocals to Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen's 1972 hit "Hot Rod Lincoln." Rumor has it that they will be joined by special guests Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch.

With five simultaneous stages, Saturday and Oct. 8 offer far too many artists to list. Saturday's artists include the Stairwell Sisters; the Devil Makes Three; T Bone Burnett; Jerry Douglas and Best Kept Secret; Allison Brown; Steve Earle and the Bluegrass Dukes; and Earl Scruggs, a true bluegrass patriarch.

Sunday's lineup features Tim O'Brien's Cornbread Nation; Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder; the North Mississippi Allstars; Alejandro Escovedo; Ramblin' Jack Elliott; and the Waybacks with special guest Bob Weir. It's a program geared to appeal to a broad array of Bay Area music fans.

In many ways, Hellman's timing couldn't have been better. Ever since the 2000 release of the Coen brothers' popular film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" which spawned a hit soundtrack, the visibility of bluegrass and old-time music has increased exponentially. If attendance at the festival is any indication, the music's popularity is still growing.

Last year, the festival attracted an audience of more than a quarter of a million to the park, with so many people arriving on Sunday that Hellman said he hoped that attendance would be more evenly distributed this year.

The event has become so big that it's created a small economy of its own, with dozens of artists using Hardly Strictly Bluegrass as an anchor for West Coast tours. A one-day bluegrass festival has emerged in Santa Cruz to take advantage of the flood of talent coming into the area. Rather than seeing the other gigs as competition, Hellman welcomes the ripple effect.

"I don't have grand objectives, that I'm going to revolutionize modern society and bring world peace," said Hellman, who wouldn't put an exact figure on his festival underwriting, but indicated that it was costing him well into six figures. "If I had loftier goals, it would continue the growth and popularity of traditional music, which has made a huge comeback.

"Secondly, it's pretty great to throw a big party. Last year we had 300,000 people and only four arrests, which were all for drunkenness. Having two days where people just enjoy each other and what they're listening to with no problems, that's an accomplishment."

L'Shana Tovah!

I think it's the year 5767, but I could be wrong...At any rate, Hippy New Weir to the weirld!
I'm not religious so won't be going to shul this or next weekend.

I don't even belong to a shul, but I teach at a JCC and since I teach 3 different classes, I light shabbat candles and sing blessings twice on Thursday and once on Fridays. Shabbat tunes & rhymes are usually stuck in my head thru the weekend.
Bringing in the light for Shabbat
Bringing in the light for Shabbat,
Put a little here, Put a little there.
Put a little light everywhere!
We're dressed up in our best cuz,
Shabbat comes like a guest,
we watch the candles shine
and
say
the prayer
for
wine!"
very catchy stuff...

There's a blessing/song called Adon Olam that's popular around now. A woman named Lynn Gold has made a list of tunes that Adon Olam can be sung to, Uncle John's Band is on it . I can't imagine how that might sound?
...
On the topic of mixing Jewish things & Deadheadism. Here are a few articles that may interest some

Apples & Honey to all!

From GDSTOO:

Bob Weir and RatDog:
We have started the ticketing process for the upcoming
tour. All orders received will be filled. It will take about
2 weeks to get it all done. We try and do this in as much of
a chronological manner as we can, but sometimes tickets
for a later date arrive before tickets for an earlier show get
to us, so not to worry about that.

Tickets are available for all shows and those of you who called
about the Buffalo shows, we have managed to secure some
more tickets, so you are welcome to mail in for those 2 days.
In other words, tickets for the Buffalo shows are available.

Monday, September 18, 2006

Once again, Mr Scott made plans without consulting me...I wasnt pleased but what could I say? One of his poker buddies had 49er Opening game tix for all. On my own yet again to a show. I figured the daughter would come along and maybe the birthday kid too, but nope, kids had stuff like homework they needed to do. A friend called from the park to let me know that dogs on leashes were okay! I wouldve liked to have shown off my beautiful Lilah (with her "coal black hair") but she'd have freaked out. She's not a "people dog" really just likes being home with her family.

Buster (today is his first anniversary of coming to live with us!) mightve been just fine but did I really want to have to schlep water & poop bags and where did we leave that leash?

Clock was ticking so I finally wrote out directions and jumped in the car.
I have been to McLaren once before around 1976 with my (then)boyfriend Joe (guitar Joe, his website is on this page with the links) We were there to see a band but I don't remember which band (hey maybe one MK was in back then? who knows? who can recall?) I remember sitting on a hill and after, passing the Cow Palace on the way home. The highway mightve changed thanks to Loma Prieta, but I found the Park. I turned down John Shelley Blvd- except for some parked cars and a handsome kid riding around in circles on a bicycle, the street seemed deserted.
I was just wondering if I should keep driving along when I recognized the bicycle kid as our own Jay Lane! No one better to ask how far down to drive! I was told I was close and to walk thru some trees to find the amphitheater. And so that's just what I did!
Once inside the amphitheater, I recognized the place from before though I don't remember the concrete theater, I did remember the hill.
The usual suspects and Bay Area Dogheads were out in full force (except for Scott). The crowd was light.
Every view was a good one.
A band was on stage playing one U2 song after another. I mentioned to a friend that the lead singer had a kinda Bono thing going on with the hat & glasses and the lead guitar had a hat like the other guy in U2. When they got to the 4th U2 song, I finally figured out that they must be a cover band (oh!). Zoo Station was the name so there ya go!
Wandered around for a bit during the setbreak not a lot of boothes but still nice to browse and visit with everyone from Mazzy, Paulyy, JB (from Grateful Graphics) & Alan to Reisha, Bahamashead & Vera. Kemmie brought her twins. Looking good in the new tie dyes, Kem!
MK, Jay, Robin , DG & others(Pete Sears!) hit the stage as MK & Buds and lots of rocking going on. Dear Mr Fantasy was a good choice for the venue, I thought. There was 'Hey Pocky Way" and "Noize has gotta go" too. They didnt play as long as I wouldve liked to hear them but it was cool set despite a few tech probs at first.
Next up was (I'll need to look up the name) aother one of those hot lil jambands that feature a fiddle player. Been seeing more and more of these. Ala SCI? Nice but don't know why they seemed to have been on stage longer than Buds?
At last David's Rubber Souldiers came on! I loved the Beatles covers and Birdsong.
For a setlist & proper names of those that sat in check out David's Rubber Souldiers page! I hear that Peter recorded the show (Hopefully the MK & Buds portion too!). By the time Dave Nelson came on, I had to get home. All in all a fun sunny afternoon!

Translation?
How do we get Ratdog into this line up?
I miss Amsterdam!

Slap on the wrist for JP Barlow?. Sure took long enough to get that day in court.

Doubtful I can lure the birthday boy ((Noah)) off his new computer or tear Princess ((Sash)) away from the telephone..but I'll try.

Stevie/Waybacks emails are too funny!

Here's the latest:

Howdy!

Things are getting strange out there, folks. Or maybe not. One way or the other we've clearly lost perspective. And it's not caffeine abuse, either ... as you know, we leanted THAT lesson the hard way. Perhaps it's just road fatigue. Festival season always means preposterous routing, and we simply do whatever it takes to get to from summertime festival to summertime festival all over North America. Necessarily that means too much sedentary time sitting in mechanical conveyances of various typestoo much greasy food (one restaurant chain has decided to cut to the chase and simply offer on their menus Fried Item # 1, Fried Item #2, etc), and too little sleep. Oooo, that's a wicked combo. It means too much time to notice What's Going On Out There.

Strangeness starts happening at the beginning of each tour. It starts at the airport. We wonder how TSA (Transporation Safety Authority, although travelling musicians regularly refer to them as "Tears Sh** Apart") can see explosive potential in possible combinations of toothpaste, perfume and hair goo when there are invariably dozens of soda cans onboard the plane and Mentos are readily available in every airport gift shops. Don't they KNOW? We admit that we take no small measure of passive-aggressive delight in carrying Mentos right onto a soda-laden airliner. It's one little way us lefties can feel like we're really Sticking It To The Man.

Perhaps we spend too much time in airports altogther, and that this contributes to the apparent Great Strangeness out there. Perhaps it starts with having read too many perfect-for-long-airplane-trip novels written by Dan Brown. Perhaps you really should expect everything else to seem strange when the inadvertent psychological cocktail of DaVinci Code, Fried Items and glassy-eyed road fatigue make you start believing you can read secret messages in the bug splatters on the windshield of your rented vehicle. Fair enough. We've all done that, right? But should it seem odd that the model name of that motor vehicle is "Contour?" What kind of name for a car is that? Doesn't that sound more like a novelty item one might find in a truck stop men's room? ("Probe" falls into the same category, and the three older Waybacks eschew that particular rental car absolutely whenever possible.) And speaking of truck-stops, is it really really odd that truck stop gift shops, of all places, should always be packed to the rafters with creepy half-lifesize bride dolls in full regalia? That ain't right. Good heavens, haven't we all seen that Karen Black And The Zuni Warrior Doll movie-of-the-week from the mid-70s? Don't we know by now that nothing good comes from having small faux-humanoids lying about? Too, the linkage between truck stops and creepy dolls eludes us altogether. And we're grateful for that. But did something happen to the country that we somehow missed this last 5 years we've been on the road? Or do we just need a nap?

Uhhhhh .... 5 years ... airports ... truckstops .... where were we?

Oh yes! The last 5 years have certainly seen a disturbing trend toward over-automation in airport and restroom washroom design, we can tell you. We're certain that the newfangled infrared-operated devices have reduced the chances of catching many exotic jungle diseases, but folks, when the electric eye don't work, homie don't get no water or towels. On more than one occasion we have found ourselves waving frantically at faucets, hand dryers and paper-towel dispensers like the robot on Lost In Space. It is most undignified.

Lost In Space .... uhhhhh ...... zzzzzzzzz ....

Right! Navigation! Navigation is always on our minds. Getting from Noontime Squat-And-Gobble to Venue Du Jour to Midnight Mini-Mart to Inevitable X-Files-Lookin' Motel in a timely fashion is always of great concern to touring bands like us, and friends, we have seen the intrusion of Strangeness there, too. We finally got fed up with MapQuest and Yahoo (aptly named) giving us funky directions, and all too often ending us up in M. Night Shyamalan-ville, so we got ourselves one of them fancy GPS units. This one talks. Oh, lots of them talk, sure ... road pal David Gans (see photo at bottom of home page) tells us that whenever he ignores the prescribed route his GPS groans rather peevishly, "Oh, all right ... ... recalculating ... " Well, peevish is one thing. But we think that consumers have a right to know when they are buying the Tourettes-enabled model. We Waybacks found out too late. We'll spare you the details.

But this summer hasn't been all strange. We've had tons of wonderful gigs and have met many, many wonderful people. One feller we didn't actually meet, but who nonetheless sticks in the collective memory was the somewhat over-served young festivarian who staggered up to our merchandise table after a show and was crestfallen to discover we couldn't sell him a Coors. "You're all out of beer? WHAT KIND OF FESTIVAL IS THIS?!?" Somehow we found this delightfully normal and reassuring. We miss that guy.

Stay awake, now. Here's the gigs:

Hippy Berthaday OxfordRobintourgirl!

Hope it was a wonderful day!
We celebrated for you by dancing to the music of Alphabet Soup which included Kenny, Jeff & Jay.
You'd have loved the festive atmosphere. The Solano Stroll is a very big street fair . Which is located where the city of Albany meets Berkeley. All along Solano there were boothes and pockets of musicians.
We had no idea where the Soup was going to be playing. We just chose a direction and flowed a few blocks downhill.
My cell phone rang and I answered to hear the sound of one of the Band of Brothers' rap, (Band of Brothers are the rest of ABC Soup that arent also in Ratdog).
One half block later, there we were- arrived ! Had fun bopping to the music- despite being directly under the hot sun, the guys were great!
Kemmie & Dave took pictures- so you will soon see how fun it was!

Bobby sit in with Jelly 9/08/06, Larkspur

Goes to show, you don't ever know

Now, I know I had placed myself under restriction from running off to venues where rumoured Bobby appearances
are supposed to take place...but after a long week setting up my classroom and going to meetings about administrivia, programming, security and curriculum, I was happy just to hear live music. So, this once, after hearing a rumour from a most reliable source, I got in touch with the Kemmiestar. Before I knew it, we were roaring across the Golden Gate Bridge on our way to Larkspur (fantastic little town). A turn here, a turn there and voila the Larkspur cafe theater (or is it the theater cafe?).
We paid the ticket and stumbled into the theater and there he was Senor Bobby on stage with a Marin band called "Jelly", finishing up Chinacat Sunflower!!
Larkspur theater is really tiny. A spirited audience was already bopping along (some dancing on chairs!) to the beginning of a rousing I Know You Rider. We saw Mazzy and stood by him- he had his big camera and so there will photos. After that Bobby stuck around for a rockin Deal. Then faster than you can say "Woof" he was out of there. It was only a few songs but it made us soooo happy to hear & see him play. Those guys in Jelly were sounding pretty good too. You can listen to them clicky here
What a treat!
I'll be smiling all weekend after that.

From Leah's column (we can always count on Leah):

"P.S.: Bob Weir and RatDog played at Bob Pritikin's Labor Day shindig. Noting that brownies served had come from a Grateful Dead recipe, Ronnie Schell said, "Rock Med is in the parking lot.'' (On that note, the Libertarian Party's primary candidate for lieutenant governor is Lynnette Shaw, founder of the Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana, and also the Marijuana Peace and Hemp candidate. She has been endorsed by Willie Nelson.) "

Woofing!
Just watched JamCam's Jerry's Birthday Bash DVD!
Lot more professionally done than I expected!
A thrill to go back a year and see some highlights from that weekend!
The Codetalkers were as awesome as I remembered.
Last year, I missed Scott during the SOTM .
It was lovely to be able to watch it with him.
The sound on the dvd is great!
Some of the cams panning out to the audience is dizzying but we froze the screen a few times and I was able
to find myself and friends to show Scott.
We enjoyed the interview sequences also very much.

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For more info, contact: Tom Ledermann/JamCam Chronicles @ (877) JamCam1 or email at: tom@jamcamdvd.com

RatDog and JamCam Remember Jerry w/New Release

(August 23, 2006, Farmington, MI) Clocking in at close to 3 hours total and boasting nearly 60 minutes of RatDog concert footage, JamCam Chronicles’ (www.jamcamdvd.com) latest offering marks Bob Weir and RatDog’s first officially sanctioned appearance on a commercially released DVD.

Shot just days after what would have been Jerry Garcia’s 63rd Birthday (August 1st) and just prior to the anniversary of his passing (August 9th) at Sunshine Daydream Farm’s 20th Annual Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash Festival in Terra Alta, WV, JamCam’s Season Two, Set Four serves as a fitting tribute to the Bob Weir described “workingman’s hero.” RatDog leads the way, delivering standout performances of the Grateful Dead classics “Sugar Magnolia,” “Jack Straw,” “Standing on the Moon,” “One More Saturday Night” and the location appropriate “Sunshine Daydream” show closer, each seamlessly bridged by an eloquently spoken Bob Weir. The centerpiece of the DVD allows Bob to beam about his current pride and joy, Ratdog, touching on both its present state (“…we pick up from where we left off the night before and we just keep kickin’ this stuff around…it’s a lotta fun.”) and its future (“Ratdog is gonna tell me what it wants…I’m not the ringmaster…it’s our band…”) prior to segueing into a stunning “Ashes and Glass.”

The Codetalkers (featuring Bobby Lee Rodgers, Col. Bruce Hampton & Jimmy Herring), The David Nelson Band, Ekoostik Hookah, The Toni Brown Band (w/former GD keyboardist Tom Constanten), One-Eyed Jack and G-13 provide musical highlights as well, and members of each are given the opportunity to share their own thoughts on Jerry by way of brief, yet poignant interview segues.

A fun-filled “Favorite Jerry Moments” segment, a look at “Trip’s Farm and the 20th Annual” and more than 30 minutes of bonus material (including almost 5 minutes of additional Bob Weir interview footage) round out this latest and arguably most essential addition to the JamCam time capsule. JamCam Chronicles DVDs can be ordered individually, or at a heavily discounted subscription rate at www.jamcamdvd.com / (877) JamCam1.

Uh oh!

ouchies!

In Progress

As usual, I'm adding to this tour journal when I can- So scroll to see if I've added on.
Got lots to do since I've been away...could take awhile...

Ramble on Rose...

It's been a big busy week.

Noah, Scott & I took off last Friday for Mendocino County. We decided to stay in Ukiah instead of Willits for the night.
Just our luck, there was a Grateful Dead cover band called 'Workingman's Ed" playing at the Ukiah Brewing Company. I was happily surprised at how much the guy who sang the "Jerry" songs sounded very Jerryesque. The Bobby was not Bobbyesque but it's always interesting to hear another take on BTW.

Saturday,

we left Ukiah for Willits. We looked forward to a big brekkie at The Country Skillet (it was a yearly tradition). We were disappointed to find the place is no longer open on the weekends! Ended up at Perko's. Blech.
On to Winnarainbow. Sash wowed us with swing dancing, PsychoShakespeare and Improv performances.
We made it home around 10:30 pm. Kids & Scott went to bed- I stayed up to pack for my trip to the East Coast.

Sunday,

Had about an hour's sleep before the alarm went off around 4:00 AM. I had a 7 AM flight and made it to SFO at 5:30 AM.
It was a crazy scramble once I saw the mess o folks in the baggage line! The outside baggage check was much shorter than the indoors one. After 15 minutes, I made my way to the massive security line. Excited airport personnel separated those of us with 7:00AM flights from everyone else and rushed us thru.

I ran to my gate and found I had a little time to spare. Just enough to buy a few magazines. I read an entire Vanity Fair magazine and embroidered a neckline of a tee shirt by the time we landed in Charlotte, N.C.

I was hungry and had a little time before my flight to Newark, so I looked for food to buy. Every canteen had a long line- except for the Starbucks. I didn't have anytime to wait for a latte- I grabbed a cold, stale, cheese sandwich which I cannot believe cost over nine dollars! In North Carolina? Again had to RUN to the gate not to miss my flight. Once on the plane, we were stuck on the tarmac for 30-45 minutes (argh).
Finally, got to EWR. Glowy was there to greet me. We jumped in her car and headed directly to...Well, I'm not sure where but it was where we going to see CSN&Y!!!!!

It was killer humidity on the way to CSN&Y. Suddenly, rain gushed down as we were driving. It was totally crazy!
It only lasted a few minutes, but it did reduce the humidity . I should've known then that I'd be hearing another 'Hard Rain's gonna Fall" in Ridgefield. It always rains hard wherever I go to before I hear that one...Bahamas, Beacon, Seattle...
We parked and hiked up to an enormous amphitheater. Glowy went in and found her Jason (we each have a Jason) who had somehow managed to find a ticket for me! Good news as the show was sold out.
And what an incredibly great show it was! I'm sorry to Scott- I oughtve pushed for us to get tix when CSN&Y Played here.
We were on a lawn. People were sitting tightly together and some suspected the show had been ridiculously oversold.
glow couldn't wander far without someone or another running over for a hug or to say hey. I met sons, cousins, friends, sons' girlfriends, friends of sons, sons' girlfriends' parents. A whole lotta love in the air.

We were a little late got in at "Almost Cut My Hair". The time went by too fast. I called Scott and held up my cell phone so we could share "Our House" which is a favorite of his. I'm too close up at Bobby shows to be able to effectively give a listen but up on the lawn the sound was loud, clear and he loved hearing it live. There were classic CSNY tunes from back when folks were protesting the war in Viet Nam. The songs segued to the band's current songs about the war in Iraq.
Normally, I don't like having an agenda pushed on me at a show...I like to feel I'm making my own decisions about what is right and what is fair. I have concerns about masses of people adopting a POV because someone "cool" or charismatic is pushing it.
However...
If a band is gonna come out swinging against the war in Iraq and the guys who got us in that mess, CSNY are the men to do it! The songs rock and the videos presented are very effective.
I'm interested in knowing if CSNY are sticking to a single setlist or if they have been varying it at all?
My fave of the night ( too bad I missed "Wooden Ships") was the big "Teach Your Children"...and I didn't mind it at all when someone on stage suggested we triple teachers' wages.
............
Monday,

Tossed our bags in the trunk of G's car. Stopped for gas and essential beverages then headed to Ridgefield.
The East coast is nothing like I thought. Everywhere I've been (except NYC) seems real rural and green compared to the Bay Area. Here the suburbs all run together . There, they have towns and villages separated with expanses of woods & countryside. The freeway system is also baffling to me. And I couldn't figure out at all what direction we were going.
Here, I'm use to ocean on the West (determined by our coastal mountains) and the Bay and hills on my East. Cooler air and a sense of height going North (which is where my hilly city on the Bay is). South is Silicon Valley and dry heat. We have the micro climate thing here so the sense of warmth & coolness is distinct.
Every road felt like a country road on the way to CT.
We first headed to Ridgefield to check out the venue. The playhouse is located in what makes me think of Martha Stewart land. Beautiful old homes with big lawns and leafy trees. The venue was around the side of a large building. Pictures of the place are in that swirly slideshow somewhere on this day's blog. We took a peek around. Then took off to look at the little city of Danbury before finding our hotel. Once checked in, it was time to get some lunch then rest a bit and finally get ourselves over to Ridgefield for the show!
The lot was active with deadheads. We barely arrived and found ourselves situated right next to a team of Dot Orgers! Great to see Jammin & Tenn Jed again. I knew faces from photos and I know names from the message board but still wasnt too sure who was who. Only excuse is that I'd been more or less sleep deprived all month. I was surprised when someone wished me a happy anniversary! True, our 18 (it's a good luck number in Judaism, by the way) year wedding anniversary was Monday! We figured we could handle celebrating apart this one time. Found out my (((Dave))) spread the word!
I brought a bag of tzchakies to give out as well as a lil something for Bud and so moved on through the lot, then up to the playhouse. The merchandise booth was all set up so I purchased my cd wristband and said "hi" to the usual suspects on the other side of the counter. Had my hand stamped, purse checked and ticket ripped so in I stumbled. I was surprised to find I could walk down to the stage as no one looked or attempted to at my ticket. I saw Ellen & Warren and went over to hug em. They were Dead Bobby center on the rail.
After hugs and chat, G & I situated ourselves at the last available rail space- MK side, me in front of a massive speaker. The stage was rather low and the guys were closer than I've seen in a few years to the front of the stage. No barriers either.
Bud appeared next to us! I was excited to see him- forgot his birthday was actually the 22nd and gave him his gift early.
After only a few moments, Charucki was stepping up to a mic and giving the smoking warnings. The lights dimmed and out trotted the band. Yep, the guys were only about 4 or 5 feet away. It was crazy to be able to be so close. The opening jam became Truckin.

Setlist:
Jam>Truckin>Take Me To The River>Youngblood, Ramble On Rose, Tomorrow Never Knows> Senor> Row Jimmy>Maggies Farm.
Blackbird.Desolation Row, Bury Me Standing, Silvio>Tequila>Iko-Iko>WharfRat>Not Fade Away. Funky Stuff (we want the bump!) Throwing Stones>Touch of Gray

My rail spot was great for visuals but when I couldnt hear "Senor" through the distortion from being too close to the speaker, I went up to my seat which really was the very farthest seat away from the stage! I could see okay from up there and found the sound much more to my liking. I took a few pix with the poor old black kodak. Always the yellow light came up - I eventually gave up on pix during the show-even though some turned out okay (see slideshow).

Set break came after a few songs and I went downstairs to chat with friends. We were going outside for air, I had my hand stamped and followed friends outside. After a while, it was time to venture back in. I went to the same guy who had stamped my hand on the way out and he asked to see my ticket. I absolutely could not find it! The guy was the same security guy that I had spoken to about cameras earlier in the day, and who checked my ticket in as well as doing my stamp. Still he was clearly not letting me back in without a ticket! My friends were already deep inside the playhouse and I was stuck. I was fuming ! Before I could figure out what to do next, a dude from the crew was walking by, I hated to ask him for help (drama!), but it wouldve been silly not to. Anyhow, I got a smile and a "Have nice set" from the security guy when I was brought through by ((((unnamed kind crew person)))).

I went back down to the rail to tell my friends about being stuck outside and was interrupted by another security guy wanting to see our tix. I asked if he was joking or what? Before he could answer, another security guy told him to forget about getting all the people to their seats- just make sure the aisles werent being blocked . Close one for me since my ticket was awol.
There was space a little closer to the middle- well, at least not right in front of the speakers. A dad & kid had moved into my old front of speakers spot. I shuddered to notice the kid did not have any ear protection.
The sound was clear and lovely in my new spot which was left of speakers. I was happy to see Bleu had showed up with his beautiful camera- Look for his pictures on dot org. He took a bunch from our angle and there was a segment during the second set when Bobby came right up to where Bleu was taking photos- those ought to be outstanding!
It was a friendly night...No trouble moving back and forth through the people, a song in front-then back to the side to dance or take a breath. I enjoyed the show so much - the Stuff was Funk oriented.

My favorite for the evening was the amazing WharfRat. Silvio, Iko, Desolation Row were great too. Oh, geez, it was all good once I was away from the front of the speakers. And there's something to be said about being flanked by so many good Ratdog tour friends. I love looking around and seeing everyone smiling & dancing!
After the show, visted witfolks- was glad to see 3 Deadnet Mamas & Rus in line for discs with me. Katrinka & Graceful came from California for vibes and these shows. Loie was in her home state.
Found a semiquiet corner to call Scott from. Was happy to learn he hit his first "Grand Slam" earlier at his Softball game. Bud was nearby as was Dennis McNally and both wished Scott a happy Anniversary. Dennis yelped it into the phone and Bud played a tune on his harmonica! Scott was so pleased!
....

Tuesday,

Slept in..sort of, had a mission to find somewhere to replace G's burnt out headlight. Then lunchies, then back to bed to recover from a late night...the day passed quickly and we soon enough were heading back to Ridgefield. One thing that made Ridgefield a different experience than your usual venue was that it was located in the middle of what appeared to be a very leafy, wealthy suburb. The venue- obvious in the pix, is part of a town hall building. Not visible from the road with the entrance around the back. We pulled in the parking lot , had stuff to drop off at one of the band's buses, while we were there a primo parking spot opened up (apparently the town hall has a gym and one of the Ridgefieldians were done working out). We schmoozed awhile with some folks, then I scrambled off to purchase a wristband for cds.
They were already letting people in so in we went....back down by the stage...rail was about 1/2 full...no one claiming the area in front of MK-so, we filled it in and found ourselves next senor jammin john. It wasnt as close to the huge speaker as the previous night.

The rail area filled up quickly and densely. I met various 40ish blonde women closing in behind me- one decked out in PTA clothes (pearl necklace included) named Betsy claimed no one could possibly be a bigger Bobby fan than herself..(oh, PUHLEEEZE!). A second rather polished looking blondie (Nancy?) was with her husband..Nancy was absolutely thrilled about being so close up to Bobby. A third well dressed 40ish blonde was with her husband and was not one bit happy about being there "It's her first GD related show" the hubby told me. He was all smiles, Wifey was looking unsure about being mooshed about but settled for being flanked by all us forty something Bobby freaks.

Soon Charux did his smoking spiel, the lights dimmed and our heroes traipsed over to their instruments.
I wondered what sort of show was in store...A pretty jam with hints of serious Jazz lead up to what I thought mightve turned into 2 Djinn but it turned out to be a rockin "Bertha". I was really happy with the setlist ..I had been splaining Setlist Tarot to a few folks recently and it seems this might ve been one of those shows where it happens.
What is Setlist Tarot you might ask?

Well, it's when a show is a bit like a Tarot card reading. Instead of laying out cards, songs get played..each song has a special bit in it that will trigger a thought or feeling for me that would only make sense to me. Mightve heard a line or lick a few thousand times but at the moment I hear it in a particular show, it tells me something new. A show can ask a question or answer one. It's I guess a synchroncity thing..I don't know but it happens big and small to me. Scott and I both found the Harmony Festival show to be extremely healing in this way.
'Sometimes the songs that we sing are songs of our own"

Well, back to Ridgefield-
I found this to be a sweet show with lots of highlights. I especially enjoyed the Lazy River Road -even with the little cough inside. There was some elbow room at the rail, so I invited Nancy up so she could be that much closer to the Bobstar.

As Dark Star started up...Wifey and Betsy were conversing loudly behind me...I tried smiling politely..hoping to make eye contact that would remind them that SOME PEOPLE WERE THERE TO HEAR THE MUSIC...no response....I glared...No response...
Finally, I channelled my inner bitch and fumed at them "CAN YOU NOT TALK DURING THE SONGS!!!"...Poor Betsy whispered she was sorry and blamed Wifey (who was somewhat hammered by now). I heard whispers behind me but as the band settled in for the 13 minute DS, I became oblivious to anything but the dreamy instrumentals and Bobby's voice. This Dark Star faded off in really delicate little notes which revved up to "She Says".

News item about the Fall Ratdog tour
........
Another Bobby item from Leah Garchik's column (8/10/06):

Bob Pritikin's 17th annual Labor Day party, which in the past few years has featured such individuals as Tammy Faye Bakker, Mickey Rooney, Carole Channing and Eddie Fisher, will this year feature Bob Weir and RatDog. Making reference to the Grateful Dead, Pritikin says booking a rock 'n' roller doesn't represent a change of philosophy. "Bob Weir did something that resonated throughout the whole world. San Francisco was the centerpiece of this wonderful music that they invented. It's about time that somebody said, hey, why don't we give you guys a trophy? Isn't that fair?''

Pritikin insists that this is his last Labor Day fete. Why? "I don't know,'' he said.

Pictures from last years big Labor day party can be viewed Here. I ran across a picture of one of my former employers hanging out @ last year's party.
Cyber tours of the venue can be taken here

Rest in Peace
Thank you to everyone who sent vibes to our nephew.
His battle began with a virus last Fall.
The virus became Aplastic Anemia.
The Aplastic Anemia became Leukemia.

Expecting to be offline for a few days.
From Munck Music-

Dear customer,

The Dead has decided to close shop. While some of the older Grateful Dead recordings will still be marketed under an arrangement the band has made with Warner Brothers, the band's post-Garcia touring organization will be shut down. This also means that all sales of The Dead's "Official Concert Recording Series" - the live recordings from The Dead's 2003 and 2004 tours - will come to an end.

So, between NOW and August 18th is the last chance to get your hands on any of the 66 live recordings from The Dead's 2003 and 2004 tours, as well as the two 2003 New Years Eve shows from Mountain View, CA, and the 2/9/04 Winter Jam show at the Warfield, in San Francisco. After August 18th, the "Official Concert Recording Series" website will shut down, and none of these recordings will be available for sale anymore !

There were innumerable highlights during the 2003 and 2004 tours, including the 5-night runs at Red Rocks in Colorado; guest performances by Steve Winwood, Willie Nelson, Branford Marsalis, and many more; the 3-set shows at Jones Beach, NY in '03; and the shows from The Gorge, WA where the scenic beauty always seemed impose its special effect on the music. All wonderful memories. All now available for the last time!

We are hopeful that the "core four" surviving members of the band will decide to perform together again, and that MunckMusic will bring you the recordings of these shows when they take place. In the meantime, we will continue our work to record and market more great bands and music festival performances such as Bob Weir and RatDog, Bruce Hornsby, Little Feat, and over 100 performances from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and more - all available at www.munckmusic.com.

In closing, all of us at MunckMusic want to extend a heartfelt "thank you" for your interest in The Dead's recordings over the past four years, and for thereby helping to spearhead a whole new way for bands and artists to market their music. Thanks to you, good music and good memories will live on for a long, long, time.

And the fields are full of dancing
Full of singing and romancing
The music never stopped

Thank you!

From Leah's column this morning:

"The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, Warren Hellman's free Golden Gate Park picnic-concert-hootenanny -- first weekend in October -- has some new feathers in its cap. Earl Scruggs and Emmylou Harris, among many headliners who've been there before, will be joined by Billy Bragg, Bob Weir and the Waybacks, Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy, Alejandro Escovedo and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. On Friday afternoon, Elvis Costello and friends will perform, and in conjunction with Daniel Pearl World Music Days -- an international network of concerts in remembrance of the journalist killed in Afghanistan -- violinist winners of a Pearl music prize will play. Also, the San Francisco Opera is sending the SF Opera Bluegrass Dukes. This may be the first time veterans of the Opera and the Dead share a stage."

Leah, Wouldnt Bobby singing the National anthem with Frederica Von Strade (and Jerry Lawson) at whenever that was at (Pac Bell )whatever the Giant's baseballball park is called, be the first (sort of) stage? I have about 35 seconds of that on video somewhere around here.

Who in their right mind would call Ratdog 'objectionable?".

Wow!
Had a blast at Connecticut Yankee last night!
Only this photo came out and I had to tweak it on my iPhoto application to be able to see it.

Kenny B was in better than fine form and those guys from The Ritual were certainly a good match. Usually when we get to see Kenny sans his doggy bandmates, it's the hippy hop thing or straight out Jazzzzz but last night ended up being a sort of GD/Jamband tribute. Two sets! There was a Mission in the Rain, Low Spark of High heeled boys..LA Fade Away to mention a few. They (The Ritual guys?) are selling cds of the show and I need to find out who & how to get a copy. Kenny had more than the usual amount of room to play it up on the GD songs..and he played em with great spirit too! I am sorry for those who couldve been there if they had known about it! . It was an excellent night!

I had never been to the venue before. It's located by or on Potrero Hill ... It's a neat clean little bar with an adjacent yard that looks just like a little beer garden. Hope sometime to get back there!

Any how, just home from picking up Noah from the camp. He had a great time. He created a computer game!!!!! and made some new friends too!!!!!!!

Only the memories remain:Grateful Dead's recordings moved

He seems to be having a great time too. Sash has been writing as well and I need to send her a care package very soon.
Meanwhile, Jason (my adult son) is here. He was on this side of the Bay and decided to stay over.
