Mother Nature smiles on San Francisco Earth Day concert By Jim Harrington, STAFF WRITER Article Last Updated: 04/24/2007 10:09:34 AM PDT
Stephen Marley sounded terrific as he led his raucous band through contemporary reggae tunes. THE FORECAST called for rain. Mother Nature, however, decided to overrule the weatherman and deliver a sunny, warm afternoon. Who can blame her? It was, after all, her day.
The surprisingly great weather, coming on the heels of Saturday's steady downpour, was the most welcome guest at Sunday's big Earth Day concert at Speedway Meadow in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
The free event — known as the Green Apple Festival — was part of a weekend-long, nationwide campaign to raise awareness about environmental issues. There were also major Green Apple concerts held on Sunday in Central Park in New York City and at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.
All Bay Area bias aside, the San Francisco concert had the best musical lineup of any of the three cities. It featured Jonah Smith, Martin Sexton, the Greyboy Allstars, Stephen Marley and Bob Weir's Ratdog.
The question going into the concert was how many people would show up to see that solid bill? Police said they were originally expecting 10,000 to
15,000 attendees, but it appeared that there was only a third that many when Sexton took the stage around noon.
As it became clear that the weather was going to behave, locals began turning out in droves.
Of course, it's difficult to get an accurate body count at a free show in the park. Some estimated that the crowd peaked at roughly 30,000, which is probably high. Organizers went with a more conservative number — 20,000-plus.
The folks that did turn out were treated to a splendid afternoon of music. I missed seeing the opener, NYC-based roots-soul singer Smith, but all of the other acts on the bill delivered solid sets. The best of the lot was Weir's Ratdog, whose terrific set was nothing short of a revelation for those that haven't seen the band in a few years.
The message, however, was not overshadowed by the music. There were plenty of green organizations with booths at the event, trying to sell people on ways to help the environment, and just about everywhere you went there were reminders to be kind to Mother Nature.
That included the hand-wash stands near the portable toilets, which pleaded with users to forgo paper towels and take heed of this advice: "Shirts and pants make mighty fine places to dry your hands."
The artists, as expected, talked the green talk from the stage. Backstage, they could also be seen walking the walk. For instance, they ate from a great lunch spread provided by chef Charlie Ayers, a Peninsula
resident, and used plates and utensils that were all compostable. Not sure if you've ever used a soft, compostable knife and fork to eat with — it's quite an adventure.
The majority of the crowd turned out to see Marley (one of Bob's many talented kids) and Weir (the former vocalist-guitarist for the Grateful Dead), but everybody seemed also to enjoy Sexton and the G-Boy Allstars.
Sexton, a 41-year-old folk rocker from Boston, delivered a fine set that balanced original tunes with well-chosen covers. The vocalist-guitarist won over the previously uninitiated with revved-up selections from his recently released "Seeds," including a solid take on "How Far I've Come," and rocked our socks with a B-3-drenched version of Billy Preston's classic "Will It Go Round in Circles."
He also hit the crowd with a killer run through Johnny Cash's classic "Folsom Prison Blues" and did a triumphant job with Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Turn On Your Love Light," a tune that the Dead regularly covered in concert.
A favorite of the jam-band nation, the Greyboy Allstars took the stage next and proceeded to knock out some heavy, heady funk-jazz grooves. The band is stocked with great instrumentalists, some of whom are better known for their work outside of the Greyboys, including saxophonist Karl Denson (Tiny Universe) and keyboardist Robert Walter (20th Congress).
This set, which drew from the band's new "What Happened to Television?" CD, provided a convincing argument that Denson, Walter and the other gents should concentrate their energies on the Allstars.
The G-Boys were followed by Marley, a reggae musician who is trying to follow in the footsteps of brothers Ziggy and Damian as well as his father, Bob. Thus far, he's off to a great start.
His performance was stronger than what I've seen from Damian, the Grammy-winning artist who hit the big time with 2005's "Welcome to Jamrock." The 35-year-old vocalist — who, bong-toting bakers will want to know, was born on 4/20 — sounded terrific as he led his raucous band through contemporary reggae tunes from this year's "Mind Control." He also tossed in a few of his dad's greatest hits, including "Buffalo Soldier" and "Could You Be Loved."
The concert climaxed with Ratdog as the band delivered a 90-minute performance that left Deadheads scratching their noggins and wondering out loud, "Gee, when did these guys get so good?"
Dead fans who have ignored Weir since the passing of his old partner, Jerry Garcia, should give the tie-dyed troubadour another chance. Ratdog has gone through many lineup changes over the years, but this current one — featuring sensational axe-man Mark Karan — is worthy of attention.
On Sunday, Ratdog's versions of "Eyes of the World," "Jack Straw" and especially the traditional jam-up of "China Cat Sunflower" and "I Know You Rider" were quite possibly the best played Dead tunes I've heard since, well, the Dead played them.
It was an absolutely triumphant showing for Bob Weir — good enough that we'll award him the coveted AMVP award (Almost Most Valuable Player) for the Green Apple Festival.
The MVP, of course, goes to Mother Nature herself for blessing us with such a wonderful afternoon to enjoy the music.

What a great weekend! Been on the go go go since Thursday! Already have a post in progress about the weeked- I'll post some of it when I get a chance. Just gotta say it- WOW!
What a difference a week makes. Last Monday, about now, I was speeding to the doctor (my 2nd visit in 3 daze) to get help for a VICIOUS attack of hives. Two daze, 3 prescriptions, an everlasting benedryl haze, a shot of steroids and a 3rd visit to the doctor later and I found out I am allergic to an antibiotic I was on for the last month. By the time, Bud was due to land at SFO, I was feeling loads better. Still breaking out in hives every once in a while but the intensity is very light compared to what was going on a mere week ago. So, yeah, Bud got here on Thursday night. So, great to see him! I think the last time was Ridgefield 06? Scott & I met Bud on the UKRD tour and share some excellent memories.
Friday started out a little cloudy but the weather turned out nice! We set out for Mill Valley early in the day. We ate a nice lunch at The Depot, I dropped off my son's (Jase) mail to him at the bank. Brought Bud over to Sweetwater and then had to get myself back home. My Sash was performing in her high school play- so the rest of the afternoon and evening was all about her. She was terrific! We were all so proud! Scott maintained the excitement at the homefront and I dashed back to Sweetwater. Barely got out of car to find a grouplet of (((((Deadnet Goddesses)))) hanging out in the lot! Kemmie reported that she had just seen Jase inside- so, I dashed off to find my big kid- somehow it never works out to see a show with him- this was as close as it got (since Furthur back in 199?) I was rude to everyone- while squeezing through the crowds yelling "Jason!". Hey, it was setbreak, btw. I didnt see or sense him around though Bud had also seen him inside earlier. I called his cell, sure enough he had left about the same moment I had pulled in. He LOVED the set he saw but had plans for early Saturday morning so needed to get to his home to sleep. How did I end up with such talented & responsible children (a mystery for the ages!) My set(2nd) was amazing! Here's some info from Jemimah Puddleduck's My Space page- I'm ordering the cds!!! 420 setlist/a few cds still available 04/20/07 (Fri) Sweetwater Saloon - Mill Valley, CA

... The room was as crowded as ever, I hung in the back, schmoozing and passing out dogtags. As the crowd shifted around, I was able to make my way over to see Ben & Christine. Christine owns a cute little shop in Burlingame called "Bare Necessities" She sells unique clothes and bath products. Really cool stuff! One of these days I hope to be slim enough to fit in something there besides the oils. They were just about to go, so I snagged a seat on the banquette they were leaving behind. It was fantastic! Over way too soon (Hey, I just got there!). Schmoozed a bit, collected my awesome Alan Hess poster & Bud and left. Was trailed about 5 blocks by Mill Valley's finest before getting pulled over. I wasnt at all nervous- I hadnt driven too fast or irratically. As far as imbibing goes, I had only had a diet coke . The officer peeked in my car- saw the license plate on my dashboard and chewed me out a little about it. I showed him that my plate has been autographed by Mill Valley's Citizen of the year. I told him it was on my dash because I didnt want it to be stolen off my car. Officer laughed but told me the CHP wouldnt be as impressed. We managed to make it down to the Peninsula without any incident. Had the customary aftershow 3 AM feast at Heidi's Pies (open 24 hrs) in San Mateo, then home to rest! ...... Saturday! The weather had gone from a little cloudy to a lot cloudy. After a leisurely morning, we got ourselves together and bravely headed out to find Speedway Meadow. The road to the park got drizzlier and drizzlier. No worries, plenty of rain gear in the back of the car. An ideal parking spot was located close to the corner of 24th & Lincoln. We ambled along toward where we thought Speedway might be. We kept hearing music playing around every bend. Each time it was another party or a car blasting a radio. We aasked a feral type and he gave us directions which worked out. Sliding down a muddy hillside we found the path. We followed it right up to some tents. A car pulled up just a head of us. Out of the car popped the always awesome Mr Bobby Weir follwed by that large handsome gray beast known now to all as Jackson. We got a smile and a "Hey ya!" before the awesome and the handsome trod off to where they were needed. On the way to the front of the stage, we ran into mr Jay. I traded a handul of dogtags for a sweet hug and continued along to get out front. There were familiar faces already gathering out front of stage. I didnt see any reason not to go stand at my favorite rail spot. So what if everyone else was hanging back? I was in Heaven,
Good girl Leah Garchik! she's keeping up with Bobby & Ratdog in todaay's column In other local Bobbyness, I managed to catch a quicky interview that was live on KGO yesterday @ 5:45 pm. Sorry , am taking some time off from blogging. I broke out in horrific hives over the weekend and have spent most of my time either on my way to the doctor or sleeping off the itching by consuming tankloads of benedryl. I'll spare describing the visuals- trust me, it's major ugly. I don't know what has caused this or how much longer this can go on for? I'm on 2 different meds and have had a shot of cortisone. Whenever hives die off in one body part0 another set breaks out somewhere else. This sucks! It needs to go away at the latest by Thursday night- when my first houseguest is due to arrive. .... Before I down another bottle of antihistimine, let me remind you that today is FREE CONE DAY at Ben & Jerry's! Go have a nice scoop (Chunky Monkey!!) for me. Also, It's TOMORROW NIGHT!!! Do Not miss Dead to the World- Mark Karan will be on!!! http://www.kpfa.org/1pro_bio/1b_gans.htm ......... Someone on Dot org posted this link to the upcoming "Losing Jerry" movie!! http://www.losingjerry.com/

Lovely Sweetwaterdog pix up in Alan's Gallery Look closely in picture# 13 & 16 and My big old face made it into the shots. It's like a family album because the Machetunim also made it into a picture or two.
The sound system at Sweetwater in Mill Valley went kerflooey last week, and so Monday night neighbors and friends rallied for a fundraiser that made about $10,000 for a new one. Bob Weir and RatDog were surprise guests, as was Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads, who in 20 years had never performed at Sweetwater. Meyer Sound donated three pieces of sound equipment. The new system will cost about $21,000; more moola is sought. P.S.: As to other interpretations of "West Side Story,'' Brian Andrews wrote to say he's the proud possessor of a benefit CD, "The Songs of West Side Story,'' on which Little Richard sings "I Feel Pretty.'' http://www.sfgate.com/columnists/garchik/
As she marvels how young USC Aiken students arrive on campus with dedication and purpose, Heather Davis readily admits she couldn't have done that at 18.
But Davis, 29, has found her own resolve as she manages a full class load as a junior honors student and as a wife and mother of three daughters.
She also has received from the University of South Carolina a Magellan Scholar Award, a prestigious program which funds a major research project. Over the summer, Davis, a history major, will visit New Orleans to capture oral interviews with area musicians and document them in relationship to Hurricane Katrina.
"People talk a lot about pre- and post-Katrina," Davis said. "Since music is such a large part of New Orleans, I want to see if some of the music is reflecting the hurricane, such as changes to the words of 'When the Saints Go Marching In' and any anger toward the response (following Katrina)."
Davis, an Aiken native, has long had an interest in history and music. She attended Aiken High School for two years before transferring and graduating from Brenau Academy in Gainesville, Ga. She decided against enrolling in college and started traveling throughout the country with friends, following the Grateful Dead and other groups part of the time.
"It's a culture within itself and has its own economy," Davis said. "I embrace that memory, just the freedom of traveling and meeting a lot of different people and hearing a lot of really good music."
She married young and within a few years returned to Aiken, got a much-needed divorce, she said, and as a single mom went into the workforce. Then at 25, Davis astounded herself by enrolling at USCA but felt she had developed the drive to succeed. Now happily married to Justin Davis, she had a third daughter in 2004. When Molly was born, Davis was back at school part-time a week later for two classes.
"I have an intellectual curiosity but didn't really know how much information I could retain," she said. "I couldn't do this without the support of my husband and family and an extraordinary group of friends. Sometimes I have to let the laundry go for reading or spending quality time with my kids. It's a juggling act for sure."
Davis appreciates the opportunity to join USCA's honors program, which brings in students from all disciplines — the sciences, education, the humanities and the social sciences. Now she will receive $3,000 to work on the New Orleans project this summer. Her advisor, Dr. Maggi Morehouse, has been supportive of her ideas and her personal success. Morehouse will serve as her mentor on the project.
"Musicians from New Orleans have displaced or have lost instruments," Davis said. "Many of the places where bands played and practiced are no longer there. Perhaps they've lost faith in the state and federal governments."
Music from The Big Easy is based on improvisation, and Davis plans to improvise with her own work. The best people to interview may be random but possess a lot of real knowledge and perspective on the Katrina disaster.
Her history professors have been gracious in letting her incorporate music into her work. For an earlier class, Davis did a project on slave songs of the U.S. She researched the question of how much the African culture was influenced by the involuntary move to the U.S. The music eventually incorporated Biblical references and led to the blues and spirituals that are still sung today.
"It was a very emotional project that really moved me," Davis said. "That's when I knew I wanted to do more projects on music in a historical context."

Spent a lovely day hoofing around Haight street Here's Noah -
It was sunny and breezy. Sasha, her friend Alexandra, Noah & I split for the city around 11:30 am. It's been a long time since I've driven to Haight street. We usually make a big day of taking BART to the Mission and walking up to Haight from there. It's a good walk and we can pass thru the Castro (shops!) that way. I think it's cool and a good thing to wander by the city neighborhoods and see the various people doing day to day routine. I digress- Anyhow, Getting to the Haight is pretty easy, 280 to 19th and then hang a right on Lincoln- drive up around and somehow end up on Waller? I was not happy to find the old parking lot is no longer open during the day! I had to park at a meter. Had to keep running to feed the meter. In the end, the meter won and I got a ticket (grrr!) Our first plan of action was lunch. Alexandra is not only a picky eater and a vegetarian but she was also observing Passover dietary restrictions, still she managed to find something to please her at Magnolia's. My kids like seeing all the Grateful Dead references in the murals at Magnolia's. Also on the way to the restrooms, are posters- we have lots of the same ones in our house. Lunch over, Sash & Alexandra headed out to shop in all the dress & shoe shops. Noah and I had our own agenda. First stop was Ben & Jerry's on the corner of Haight & Ashbury. He was dying to try Americone (ala Stephen Colbert's flaver) but they were sold out so Noah settled on one of the excessively chocolate flavors. I'm not on a diet but since my parents gifted us with an enormous state of the art treadmill (weve had it almost a week now!) I'm trying to be worthy and am avoiding fattening treats (so far, so good!). Loads of German speaking tourists were also vistin the shop. Outside the B&J's I watched asmall group of tie dyed clad youths with cameras on their way up Ashbury- maybe off in search of 710?
Next stop for us was Postively Haight Street- Noah let me take a picture with my phone of him there. Noah had saved up to add a new Grateful Beany bear to his collection (he has so many of them- they have their own room in the cubby under our stairway which is adjacent to Noah's bedroom). No chose the bear that wears a dog suit. I already forgot it's name but it's birthday is a Rex benefit. So there.
Next stop was my turn- Mendel's! I'm working on a special something for someone's birthday and Mendel's carries all kinds of artsy craftsy stuff that one won't find at a Michael's. Sure enough, Mendel's came through. I got a bag full of helpful items for the big project.
I badly wanted to poke around that Tibetan treasure store but there wasnt time and Noah and I had both been wanting to hit Booksmith before the girls were done.
Booksmith is great- I always see too many reads I want in there! I settled on a silly "Karma Violations" pad and a handful of funny cards. Noah fsettled on a faux leather covered, multi edition "HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy" book.
Within a moment of leaving Booksmith, the girlies called to meet up. Too many shops so little time! We scurry back down the Peninsula. Kids had fun- even Alexandra who had been a bit worried because she had heard the Haight was a bad part of the City. She discovered it's a pretty cool alternative to the mall for clothes & shoe shopping.
Me & my baby- 1st day of Kindergarten (1987!) He's 25 (geez!) today! It's also my friend Dave's daughter's birthday!! Wishing both kids a lifetime of happiness. Here's to a great year ahead!
Setlist for Ratdog 5 Markymark sang lead on these- Deal Hey Pocky Way The Weight
With Bobby Sugaree Iko Iko ,,,,,,
Thought 4:45 would never get here. I vroomed off to retrieve Noah from the Middle School then vroomed home to let him out. It was too early to head to Sweetwater Saloon, but I wanted to avoid the worst traffic and left as soon as my homemaker duties were accomplished. I had called friends in Mill Valley and warned them that I was stopping in for a bit. 4:45 is pretty trafficky but still I was able to get to MV in a little over an hour. Had a lovely visit with friends. They fixed me up with a cup of espresso & sent me on to the show . Sweetwater was only about a third filled when I arrived at exactly 8:30 on the dot. Once inside the first face I saw was that of my brother in law ! Chris is my sister's husband. My sister was home with kids . Chris was with his own sister & her husband. In Yiddisch there's a word to describe relationships such as "My sister's sister in law "or " My brother's brother in law" The word is Machetunim. My sister's Machetunim all live in Mill Valley but this was the first I'd ever seen any of them at Sweetwater. Chris is a friend of the guy who was emceeing the show and one of the Machetunim plays part time in a Mill Valley band and so it wasnt so odd they were there. They seemed to know everyone in the place too. My Jason cancelled out on me which was okay- Ratdog wasnt going on til around 11 pm and Jase wouldnt have been able to hang around so long. After letting my BIL buy me a diet coke, I went to park myself in the front. All the little tables were cleared out so there would room to dance. Soon enough, the usual suspects came traipsing in. So glad to see Alan had made it up from SoCal to photograph the evening (Can't wait til he gets those pix up on his blog or in his Gallery) It was nice to see Caroline again. Paulyy found his way up too. Eventually, Mazzy got there . I saw Reisha for a few moments early on but don't know where she went. The place filled up fast. I can't remember the last time it was so packed- maybe Crusader Rabbit?! Heather Combs- a regular Sweetwater musician opened the show. I'm lame, I never caught the names of the other artists who came on after that. I'm thinking it was Pat Nevins who was playing his heart out but I just don't recall. Jelly came up for a set. And a combo of musicians that included Lorin Rowan and Robin Sylvester played "Come Together" By the time that Ratdog (sans Bobby) come on it was getting crazy! Someone was tickling me and poking me - sure enough the Machetunim had wedged up near me. At the same time a couple on one side of me had a full blown argument and (after 3 hours of bopping in place at the front) left. All kinds of shifting and just as MK got going with "Deal" everyone shifted themselves just so and the let the real fun begin! Deal was good, Hey Pocky Way- also nice the Highlight of the Ratdog 5 set was The Weight. Before you could blink an eye, Bobby was right there- just inches away from Courtney. I was in front of Kenny and felt a little too close to his mic stand. I was getting jabbed by someone dancing behind me and cameras were flashing on both sides of my head. Too distracting. I let Paulyy & a little blonde girl take my spot in the front and enjoyed the space they left for me. Still too close to Bobby- who was looking great and playing a fantastico Sugaree ! So animated too! I remembered I had a camera in my cell phone and snapped the two blurries in this post. Energy was peaking thru IKO IKO! I can't even describe it- I was having too much fun singing & dancing along! I remember smiles from the doggies, the Machetunim, the friends all around us. A very sweet night. And that was all of Ratdog. A few others came on after them, but it was late- I had been dancing or swaying in place for about 4 hours. my old bones said it was time to get on home. I said all my farewells and headed back to the Peninsula. Can't wait to do it all again in a few weeks!

Ratdog to do full show with Keller Williams Feb 2, 2007
In an email to the Grotto, Dennis McNally confirms that, the Keller Dog tour will feature a full RatDog show!!!!!
When told the fans want to know, he responded with "Keller will play a long single set, I believe, and RatDog will do its full show. ABB stuff is way in the future and I have no info."
