A message from Headcount

Hey folks

HeadCount, Bobby's voter registration group, is sending a team of two people on the upcoming tour and we just had one drop out. So we are looking for someone who can commit to traveling to every show on the upcoming tour and register voters.

Before I go into the details let me say that this is very hard work and we hold our volunteers to the highest possible standard. Alcohol and drug use is prohibited when working and our volunteers must treat this like a serious job. This is not a party. It's a very important commitment to the cause of voter mobilization. That said, it's also a dream gig. Three weeks on the road with RatDog and the Mule, with all expenses paid. You will be representing an organization that Bobby personally supports and helped create.

The job responsibilities and details are as follows:

> Attend every show on the tour, with your trip beginning with a drive from SF to Eugene OR and ending in the Bay Area
> Communicate with local volunteers in advance of each show
> Set up a voter registration table at each show
> Train and manage local volunteers
> Stage an effective voter registration drive at each show
> Breakdown after each show and complete HeadCount's checkout procedure
> Follow protocols and maintain a high professional standard at all times

You will travel in a rental car with one other volunteer (female) and stay in a shared hotel room with two beds. We would also consider applications from couples and expand our operation to three people instead of two.

HeadCount covers the cost of rental car, hotel, gas and materials. Volunteers also receive a $25 per day per diem to cover food and other personal expenses. We will also cover airfare to and from San Francisco should our most qualified applicant live outside of the Bay Area (locals perfered though).

Note that we are looking for people who have demonstrated leadership experience and commitment to civic causes. Being a big fan is great but not a qualification. This is HARD WORK. If you just want to see RatDog shows, this isn't a good way to do it. You will, in fact, miss many sets of music while working. Your experience will be much closer to being part of the crew than being a fan.

But if you want to do something really memorable that you feel great about, then this may be the gig for you. Being a good citizen has never been more fun. In this election year, thousands of people will take to the streets registering voters. Only two will get to do it on RatDog/Mule tour.

The Sixties Aren't Dead

Who would have figured that both Bo Diddley and Alton Kelley, the guy who helped start the whole hippie scene in San Francisco would have died within days of each other? Kelley, who drew iconic posters for rock and roll concerts in San Francisco, even drew a few for Diddley's performances.

Everyone knows Bo Diddley because his influence on rock and rhythm and blues was so great, and he kept performing to the end of this life. Fewer knew the names behind the wild posters that sprung up, fully formed, from the streets, alleys and parks of the city where Flower Power blossomed.

The mid-1960s were one of those moments, a turn in the keyhole of history, when one generation loses its grip on the popular culture and another takes over. The Beats, who had a significant outpost in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood, were over and something new was bubbling up. Rock historian Paul Grushkin told me:

"Imagine yourself there in San Francisco in 1965. It's a beautiful day, light bouncing off the bay, and you've got this fifth sense that something's about to happen. You just can't wait to put on a dance to showcase it.... Once he met Stanley Mouse, they'd go to the San Francisco public library and find art books. They would laugh and laugh and librarians would shush them up."
In those books, the long-haired, drug-experimenting, beaded guys found a way to publicize their dance concerts, and almost unknowingly to connect their art to the great tradition of previous artists.

"The last time there was any really posters done that had any value done were the posters done for World War II. "Loose Lips Sink Ships." But that was good stuff. At least it was graphically there," he told the San Francisco Chronicle a few years ago. "I saw one that showed a P-38 fighter plane and down below you could see a Japanese city burning and bullets were flying and it says "Payoff for Pearl Harbor" with a big Cadillac emblem. There was some pretty wild stuff during that period. Then it went Madison Avenue and the man in the gray flannel suit where it just got kinda bleak."

So when they started bending and twisting type and distorting images, they knew that artists had taken risks before.
"Toulouse Lautrec in his day was doing pretty much the same thing," agreed Grushkin. The Frenchman drew daring, provocative posters of sem-nudes and dance-hall girls; Kelley and Mouse's work thrust viewers headfirst into the sex-drugs-rock-and-roll world, forcing viewers to look through the lens of someone on a drug-induced high. Fans spent hours examining the posters for messages and jokes; if you couldn't read the poster, you shouldn't show up at the concert, went the saying.

'CENTS FOR SENSE’ CAMPAIGN RAISES FUNDS AND AWARENESS FOR HEADCOUNT
WIDE ARRAY OF ARTISTS AND PROMOTERS KICK IN 'A PENNY PER STATE FOR DEMOCRACY'

More than a dozen artists and promoters are backing HeadCount by agreeing to donate 50 cents from the sale of each ticket at participating concerts to support the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization's voter registration campaign. These concerts, which include six national festivals as well as events at the world famous Red Rocks Amphitheater, have all been branded with the banner of "Cents For Sense." This integrated fundraising and message initiative is expected to raise close to $75,000 and help HeadCount achieve its goal of registering 100,000 voters before November's election.

The festival lineup consists of Summer Camp, Mountain Jam, High Sierra, All Good Music Festival, Camp Bisco, and Gathering of the Vibes. Labor Day weekend concerts by The Allman Brothers Band and Bob Weir & RatDog (August 30) and Gov't Mule and Umphrey's McGee (August 31) are also participants in the Cents for Sense campaign.

"We set out to find a way that bands and promoters can support the cause and put a real voter participation message behind their concerts," said Marc Brownstein, HeadCount's co-chair and the bass player for the popular electronic rock band The Disco Biscuits. "We're really touched by the outpouring of support."

Brownstein's band was one of the first to participate, donating 50 cents from the sale of each ticket on their winter tour in January. STS9 followed suit with their winter tour, raising over $10,000 for HeadCount. Michael Franti and Spearhead will participate with two headlining concerts in Bend, Oregon (May 23) and Eugene, Oregon (May 24). Upstate New York rock band moe. has also made a significant contribution, raising over $5,000 through donations from ticket and merchandise sales.

Meanwhile, charities affiliated with Dave Matthews Band and Jack Johnson have donated an additional $70,000 to cover the costs of sending voter registration teams on the road with their respective U.S. summer tours. The Bama Works Fund, a donor-advised fund whose board of directors includes each member of Dave Matthews Band, has supported HeadCount since 2004 and is one of the organization's largest financial backers. Funding for this summer's Jack Johnson tour came from the foundation run by apparel brand Patagonia. Patagonia's "Vote the Environment" initiative is one of the key messages of Johnson's All At Once campaign, a social action network providing information, tools, and motivation to empower individuals to become active in their local and global communities. O.A.R. will donate VIP ticket packages for each concert on its summer tour, to be auctioned by HeadCount.

Efforts extend from these top-selling bands to up-and-coming ones like The Ryan Montbleau Band, which is donating 50 cents per ticket from every single one of its shows from now through November 2008. Venues such as The Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado have also signed on. In addition, the Cents for Sense campaign is backed by various media outlets that have donated advertising space to promote these concerts. Cents for Sense media sponsors include Village Voice Media, which has provided advertising in various weekly arts papers, Relix Magazine, and JamBase.com.

Deadhead Legacy Was Built to Last

Deadhead students rejoiced at the recent addition to UC Santa Cruz’s McHenry Library: An archived collection of the Grateful Dead’s photographs, letters, artwork, newspaper clippings, posters, and backstage passes from over three decades of touring.
Soon after, they got back to their astrophysics assignments.
UCSC and the Grateful Dead practically have the same roots and parallel stalks: Both stemmed from the West Coast in 1965, both have reached acclaim for their bohemian atmosphere, and both have national prestige. Yet only one of these is attempting to change their image after over 30 years of embracing a unique counterculture.
Chancellor George Blumenthal stated recently that we are outgrowing our image from the 1970s. But, with the inauguration of Dead Central, it seems as though we can’t outrun the offbeat and informal reputation that our predecessors set when UCSC was just a small liberal-arts university in the woods.
Sure, there was a time that UCSC wasn’t taken seriously, procuring nicknames such as “Tie-Dye High” and “Uncle Charlie’s Summer Camp.” For a university that is more closely related to the Age of Aquarius than the Information Age, most of those who attended UCSC during that time did not mind. In fact, alumni embraced the counterculture that this university represented, and in many ways, we still do.
Our new-and-improved McHenry Library already houses the compilations of science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein, who is best known for his works championing sexual liberation, free love and individualism. Beat poet, painter, pacifist, and novelist Kenneth Patchen, also known as the Proletariat Poet, is archived within the cement walls of the library, joining the only intact collection of photographer Edward Weston’s project prints in the world. If those walls could talk, they would talk about love, self-definition, experimentation, and peace: not expansion, physics, and fiscal advancement.
Photography darkrooms are turning into digital computer labs, music is now spawned from a synthesizer, and libraries are being stored in online references as we lurch into the technological age. Old art forms are made new with the wonders of science, and with the onslaught of advancement, our roots are forgotten in the midst of progress.
In 1997, UCSC switched from the Narrative Evaluation System (NES), a maverick pass-or-fail technique that required professors to give a full report on each student’s progress, to the now-uniform UC grading system, thus giving students the benefit of a grade point average and the eligibility to compete as one of the top-standing students in the nation.
With the demise of NES came the birth of the School of Engineering under Chancellor M.R.C Greenwood. Along with the prestige-hungry administration, Greenwood spurred the cultivation of the electrical engineering, applied mathematics and computer science departments in the hope that our reputation would change.
Despite the noble efforts of Greenwood, Blumenthal and their colleagues to advance UCSC toward a mantra of research — and simultaneously sending it on an ascent to national notoriety — our scarlet letter has remained emblazoned on our chests, which many of us proudly bare.
This present-day notion that the times are changing is not solely expressed through academics and is posing a large inconvenience to the students who still live this counterculture.
Controversy broke when the administration alerted the student body of the new security measures to be taken on April 20. Hundreds of students smuggled friends onto the campus, hiding them within university housing, and marched to Porter Field — joining the thousands who walked to campus from every direction through meadows and dense forests to partake in one of the many time-honored traditions that keeps UCSC on the outskirts of traditional universities. These acts of rebellion serve to solidify the sense of unity, perseverance, activism, free speech and movement on campus; through defiance, the student body was channeling the counterculture of eras past and reaffirming that it isn’t going to be forgotten any time soon.
The powers-that-be should realize that if we want something done, we’ll do it ourselves. It’s the way we’ve always been and how we’ll continue to be; and no powers of the administration or the law can stand in the way when thousands of students are standing in opposition.
According to Grateful Dead member Bob Weir, UCSC was given the collection because the Dead are part of a neo-bohemian culture that still resides in the hills of Santa Cruz. Weir points out that both the Dead and the university “continue to make a major, positive impact on the world.”
The notion of progress and the recent push to be a competitive national university has mass appeal. Yet, no matter how many accolades we receive, forgetting the legacy ingrained in the city of Santa Cruz itself is impossible. Our legacy can be heard in the faculty member’s voices, seen in the graffiti that covers the cement walls, viewed in the art crafted by students, and felt through the student body’s actions toward a future that continues to change for the better.
Despite the administration’s heavy push toward all that is technological and scientific, and their attempts to instill a heavy-felt sense of “order,” it is starting to look like our long-standing reputation is here to stay. After all, it is the students, not the institution, which holds the power to change.

San Francisco psychedelic rock pioneers and Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers the Grateful Dead announced the donation of the band's extensive archive — which documents the group's history from 1965 to the present — to the University of California at Santa Cruz.

It was initially unclear whether one famous item of apparel would be part of the archive: Bob Weir's famous cutoff denim shorts. While Catherine Bach may have introduced them into pop culture in her role as the leggy cousin of Bo and Luke Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard, if there's one person who is responsible for bringing Daisy Dukes — the outrageously short cutoffs — to rock 'n' roll, it's Weir.

Throughout the '80s and '90s, the Dead's rhythm guitarist sported the decidedly male-inappropriate garb onstage during the band's summer tours, earning good-natured ribbing from legions of Deadheads as well as eternal infamy in the Urban Dictionary, the online arbiter of colloquial slang. "Weirs," as they're defined, are "a pair of very short shorts worn by a male in the style of Grateful Dead guitarist Bobby Weir. Normally attired during the summer months and accompanied with a tank top."

Sadly, at last week's press conference, the now-60-year-old Weir — who was joined by Dead percussionist Mickey Hart — appeared without his trademark hot pants, instead opting for a more appropriate blazer-and-Birkenstocks ensemble. But that didn't dispel the notion that the "jorts" he once donned might make an appearance at the newly renovated McHenry Library, where the collection will be housed.

"Those particular shorts could be included in the archive," the graying musician said from the podium, "but I think I could do better by putting them up for auction and giving the money to a worthwhile charity. But you never know."

So Deadheads visiting the archive, which is expected to be open to the public within the next two years after being inventoried, will have to wait to see if a pair of Weirs makes it down to Santa Cruz. Weir told SF Weekly after the press conference that the university's historical preservationists might have a tough job on their hands if they permitted visitors to try on his infamous nut-huggers.

"They wouldn't make it through the first butt that hit them," he said with a laugh. "Those things are threadbare. I mean, they started out as jeans back in the '70s. I wore them until they were no longer serviceable as jeans, and then I made them into the cutoffs. They ripped across the backside at one point, but I still wore them for a while afterwards. I just didn't turn around much. But I still got 'em. They're a little fragile now, but if I lose about 10 pounds, I can still squeeze into them if I have to."

Music documentary "Chasin' Gus' Ghost" will screen on March 29 as a part of the On Location: Memphis International Film Festival.

The film, directed by Todd Kwait, is a labor-of-love documentary focused on one of America's most beloved forms of folk music, the jug band. Featuring a who's who of '60s folk artists like Rock and Roll Hall of Famers John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful) and Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), David Grisman, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur and Jim Kweskin, "Chasin' Gus' Ghost" explores the history of jug band music and the influence it had on these legendary musicians.

Jug band music has deep roots in Memphis. Two of the most famous early jug bands were from the city: Cannon's Jug Stompers, featuring Gus Cannon, and the Memphis Jug Band, featuring Memphis native and blues godfather Will Shade. Both bands recorded and played in Memphis during the 1920s and 30s. Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers were a popular Beale Street act into the 1930s. Three decades later, following the folk revival of jug band music in the early 1960s, Will Shade and Gus Cannon recorded an album for Memphis' Stax label.

A Benefit for Martin Fierro
Longtime Jerry Garcia collaborator Martin Fierro has been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and, like many musicians, does not have medical insurance. Luckily, a number of musicians have rallied behind the veteran saxophonist and will play a benefit concert at Sebastopol, CA’s Odd Fellows Hall on February 29. The gig is being billed as “three sets of Kanvus with special guests” and all proceeds will help Fierro with his medical bills. The event’s organizers will also host a silent auction throughout the night and, to that end, are looking for donations from bands and musician (particularly signed CDs, posters, shirts, photographs and tickets to shows).

Earth Day music festival expands to 8 cities

NEW YORK (Billboard) - The 2008 Green Apple Festival won't "change the world," Green Apple founder/executive producer Peter Shapiro says, but this year's third installment of the event will expand from three locations to eight U.S. city parks for simultaneous outdoor festivals on April 20.
In an effort to raise the profile of Earth Day (April 22), producers of the Green Apple Festival, in collaboration with the Earth Day Network and presenting sponsor Chase, will set up free concerts in New York (Central Park), Washington, D.C. (the National Mall), Chicago (Lincoln Park Zoo), Miami (Bicentennial Park), Denver (City Park), Dallas (Fair Park), San Francisco (Golden Gate Park) and Los Angeles (Santa Monica Pier).
No artists have yet been confirmed, but "we're looking to have as an eclectic lineup as we can," Shapiro says, adding that about four "big acts" will perform in each city.
During the two days before the festival, approximately 150 music clubs across the country will be enlisted to help spread the message of environmental awareness. Each venue will be encouraged to use environmentally friendly supplies, such as biodegradable cleaning materials and recycled napkins and paper towels. In addition, "We're going to encourage the talent at all of these shows to acknowledge from the stage that it's Earth Day," says Shapiro, who owned the now-closed environmentally focused New York venue Wetlands Preserve. "We'll also ask the bands to make a contribution to an environmentally oriented charity of their choice."
With such acts as Bob Weir & Ratdog, the Decemberists, Taylor Hicks, Stephen Marley and Kaiser Chiefs, last year's festival, billed as the largest carbon-neutral event of its kind, took place in New York, Chicago and San Francisco. Shapiro says the shows drew 15,000, 40,000 and 25,000 people, respectively. He hopes the 2008 fest will draw 500,000 concertgoers across the board.
"What's exciting is that Green Apple will be the biggest Earth Day event in the country," he says.

It was a stormy, messy drive but I made it to Mill Valley Rec Center in time to nosh on some yummy chicken and dance to Bobby Weir as he played 6 songs with local band Jelly and Pat Nevins.
I'm not sure of the order but these are the songs that Bobby (looking good and sounding great) played
Deep Elem, Playing in The Band, Sugaree, Shakedown Street, Good Lovin and Brokedown Palace.

Greetings from dank, drippy Oakland CA!

It's been a quiet couple of months musically, but I have been busy! The Sirius Satellite Radio gig is great fun ( If you'd like to check it out, can get a free three-day online trial at http://www.sirius.com/gratefuldead - and that's good for all channels, of course!), and I have also been working on several musical projects that (if all goes well) will yield happy results in the year to come.

My Bay Area dance card is filling up all of a sudden, and touring plans for the year are just starting to take shape. I'll post more festival gigs soon, and if all goes well there will be some interesting collaborations as well. And who knows? Maybe even a club tour - it's been a while!

Live music fans have been freaked out about losing Sweetwater, the beloved Mill Valley nightclub that closed last year when it lost its lease.
The way it looks now, their prayers for a new Sweetwater have been answered and then some. In fact, Marin may end up with two Sweetwaters instead of one. Here's the scoop:

The original Sweetwater Saloon that everyone knew and loved for 37 years is expected to reopen in a new location in downtown Mill Valley this spring.

In July, a couple of months before they had to close the club, Sweetwater owners Becky and Thom Steere took over the Larkspur Cafe Theater, which they have just renamed Sweetwater Station.

The new name immediately rekindles speculation that the Larkspur venue at 500 Magnolia Ave. replaces the old Mill Valley Sweetwater. The Steeres insist that isn't the case, reiterating that they plan on reopening in Mill Valley as soon as they can.

"I don't want people to think, 'Oh, yeah, they're moving Sweetwater to Larkspur,'" Becky told me when the name change became official this week. "I want to make it clear that Sweetwater Mill Valley is opening soon. These are two separate entities."

The Steeres decided to have Sweetwater in the name because they wanted patrons to

know that it's being run by the same people who ran the Mill Valley club.
"I wanted to have it connected to Sweetwater because it is a music club, not a theater," Becky explained. "Everyone said, 'So why don't you call it Sweetwater something?'"

Sweetwater Station was inspired by the fact that the bar portion of the building, a historic landmark built in 1870, was once the stationmaster's house for the Northwestern Pacific Railroad.

"He raised something like 10 kids in it," Becky said. "Right behind us is the old stucco hut where passengers used to wait for the train."

In addition to connecting the Mill Valley Sweetwater with its sister venue in Larkspur, the new name also eliminates a lot of confusion with other places in town, and it's a lot less clunky than the old one.

"We were constantly getting confused with the Lark Theater and the Lark Creek Inn and everything else," Becky said. "And did you ever try to answer the phone and say 'Larkspur Cafe Theater' when you're in a hurry?"

Mill Valley's Sweetwater Saloon is slated to move into 32 Miller Ave., the former Greenwood home furnishings and gift store, which is just around the corner from the original club on Throckmorton Avenue. The landlord is renovating the building, so the Steeres are uncertain about a move-in date, although they're hoping to reopen sometime this spring.

Unlike the Mill Valley Sweetwater, which is a bar and nightclub, Sweetwater Station is an all-ages venue that offers a dinner menu, serves just wine and beer, books quieter, more acoustic music and caters to an earlier crowd.

The Steeres picked the new name from some 75 suggestions from musicians, customers and everyone else who wanted to weigh in on the subject.

"Everybody said they liked Sweetwater Station," Becky said. "It's easy. Sweetwater Station just fit."

--In the mid-sixties, the obsession with folk music among young white musicians started to take some weird turns. What we got were bands like The Lovin' Spoonful and Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions (better known under their eventual name, the Grateful Dead). It was the jugband music recorded in the early decades of the phonograph that really lit the spark for these psychedelic folkies, and the new documentary Chasin' Gus Ghost chronicles this peculiar genre. In addition to priceless archival footage the movie features interviews with John Sebastian of the Spoonful, Bob Weir, Geoff Muldaur and tons of concert footage. Best of all, there's a free screening on Sunday, January 27 at the Old Town School of Folk Music. It's at 2 pm; afterwards there'll be a "jug jam" until 6.

"Tales from the Golden Road" will premiere this Sunday, January 20 at 4 p.m. ET, with an encore January 21 at 10 a.m. ET on the Grateful Dead Channel, SIRIUS channel 32.
In the premiere episode of "Tales from the Golden Road," Gans and Lambert will be joined by Grateful Dead and RatDog guitarist Bob Weir, longtime Grateful Dead publicist and historian Dennis McNally, and the producer of the Trips Festival film, Eric Christensen. The roundtable discussion will focus on the early era of the Grateful Dead and the Trips Festival, a three-day event in 1966 that involved some of the earliest Dead performances chronicled in Christensen's film. The two-hour monthly show will invite Grateful Dead fans to call in and participate.

The Grateful Dead Channel, dedicated to the music and legacy of the Grateful Dead, launched exclusively on SIRIUS Satellite Radio in 2007. The channel features music spanning the entire career of the Grateful Dead with unreleased concert recordings and original shows hosted by band members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. The channel also features archival interviews with Jerry Garcia and contributions from Grateful Dead expert David Gans and Dead archivist David Lemieux.

Film Features Portland's Beloved Fritz Richmond

Acclaimed jug band documentary "Chasin' Gus' Ghost" is set to screen at the 25th Reel Music Festival (http://www.nwfilm.org/) in Portland at the Whitsell Auditorium on January 29, 2008. "Chasin' Gus' Ghost" has recently screened to sold-out crowds at the Woodstock Film Festival, Hartford International Film Festival and the San Francisco Jug Band Festival.

The film, directed by Todd Kwait, is a labor-of-love documentary focused on one of America's most beloved forms of folk music, the jug band. Featuring a who's-who of '60s folk artists like Rock and Roll Hall of Famers John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful) and Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), David Grisman, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur and Jim Kweskin, "Chasin' Gus' Ghost" explores the history of jug band music and the influence it had on these legendary musicians.

Fritz Richmond, who made his home in Portland later in life and is widely considered to have been the finest jug and washtub bass player in the genre, is featured throughout the film. Fritz passed away while "Chasin' Gus' Ghost" was being filmed, and in some ways the film became an ode to Fritz - to his talent and character. He led an illustrious musical life, co-founding the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and performing with Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder and the Grateful Dead. "Fritz was a cultural icon," says Sebastian in the film.

Todd Kwait says, "One of the last things Fritz said to me was that if I wanted to tell the complete story we needed to go to Japan and the Yokohama Jug Band Festival." Todd followed his advice, and filmed what became some of the documentary's most exciting and endearing scenes.

During the 70’s there were only 2 great multi-day greenfield music festivals with camping in North West England, Bickershaw and Deeply Vale. Bickershaw, held on a fairly wet May weekend in 1972 was around £2.25 in advance for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Around 40,000 people attended and the festival inspired many audience members to pursue careers in the music industry.

Golfer Dedicates Victory to Grateful Dead

SIEM REAP, Cambodia -- American Bryan Saltus shot a 5-under par 67 to win the inaugural Cambodian Open on Sunday, dedicating his first Asian Tour title to the Grateful Dead band.

Saltus finished with a 17-under 271 total to top third-round leader Adam Groom (71) of Australia by three strokes. Groom was followed by Prom Meesawat (70) and Thaworn Wiratchant (70) of Thailand.

"This is awesome. I would like to dedicate this win to the Grateful Dead, as they have inspired me all the way," said Saltus, who has attended 153 concerts.

Saltus birdied the first three holes and celebrated his win by jumping into the water by the 18th hole. He won $47,550 at the event played near Cambodia's prime tourist attraction, the temple Angkor Wat.
